There's surf, but it is blustery SWesterlies...Puts may be your best bet. The roads are bad all the way between Croyde and Barnstaple, you'll need patience to get through.

A good shop to hang out in

Well, as the inventive headline suggests, this post is about good (surfy) shops to hang out in - because of what they sell, of course, but mainly because of who is behind the counter. You are right, nothing beats a moody, stoned teenager with a Bob Marley T-Shirt or, even higher on my list, is the cool surfer dude that is way too out there to speak to us mere mortals about anything that doesn't involve three fins.

Walking into a friendly shop is a bit like walking into your Mummy's kitchen - it's warm and friendly and smiley and you can ask for stuff and you will be given stuff and no-one makes you feel guilty about it.

Of course there is Constantine Surf Store and the lovely Des, I have already told you about that gem...But on my last Cornwall trip I went down to Perranporth and I drove past Bathsheba and I thought "Hang on, I've seen their ads in mags and stuff, I wonder how it is in there (and I wonder if they need tide books)" and I hit the breaks and I parked on the curb and I upset all the locals trying to squeeze past, but hey, it was all worth it.
Inside I found Dave and Matt and they made me laugh a lot within the first minute of me being in there and I reckon that is a pretty good indication of a good shop. I was so happy in there, next time I will bring a flask, a deckchair, a blankie and Trivial Pursuit and I will make myself at home.

Yeah, so if you are down that way and you need anything surf-related or you are sad and you want to see some happy faces, go in there and have a good time....

Beach Striptease

Evening! Ha, I thought that title might make you all curious. Alas, no visible nudity here. Sorry. Just the potential of me flashing some poor sod in Saunton car park this morning while changing into my wetsuit.
Me and the lovely Emily - who refuses to have her photo on here because she is certain she looks like an ogre (!!) in every pic - went for a little longboard this morning and boy, was it chilly. So I thought I'd use this ueber-technology changing device called a Dryrobe that I was lucky enough to have been handed a few days ago.

 ...and guess what? It is big so you can fit all of yourself plus jacket plus bobble hat under it and I am even able to climb all the way into my Minizip (which isn't easy) AND put on my hood without leaving the shelter of the Dryrobe. You're a bit like a turtle, you pull in all your extremeties and then when you're safe and all dressed you pop them out again. It's extremely warm, so warm that I hung out in it in my van after changing with nothing underneath (yep). So basically, it'll save you from dreading changing in car parks.
Yes, and to silence you doubters out there, it is different from towelling robes in that it actually stays dry around you. How did the guy from Dryrobe do it? I don't know, he must be clever, I guess...

Pressie time for kooksurfer Part 1

Somehow this Cornwall trip has turned into an exciting event of trying out/ trying on new stuff.
Lovely Malcolm from Snugg Wetsuits in Newquay has finished not just one, but two new suits for me, both of them one-off prototypes with a view to turning them into the new ladies range.
I always wonder why people still buy wetsuits off the rack when you can have one made to measure here in Newquay. Especially you girls out there! I mean, aren't you all sick of having Hibiscus flowers printed on your chest??? And suits fitting you on the top, but not on the bottom and vice versa?

Recently at Constantine..

Today I went on a bit of a tide book selling mission down to Cornwall. It was pissing it down, but the drive was actually very nice as nobody was braving the roads! I love road trips!
I went to see lovely Des at Constantine Bay Surf Store to eat some Almond Slices, drink cheap coffee and talk about this and that. I suggest you go down there if you have a minute, are passing or are after some equipment- you literally won't find a nicer guy to have a natter with and advise you on all sorts of surf-related matter....

Here's a photo of me, a Christmas stocking and the Cornwall edition of Highs+Lows- Des's idea is to put some nice stuff together for you and your surfy loved ones, so if you are stuck for ideas, well, here's your answer!

Ok, so I am not the most talkative on here, well, quite often I have got nothing more to say than "I've just had a cuppa" or "Morning" plus I have been busy putting the finishing touches to the new tide books for 2013 and believe you me, it's been a lot of stuff to get my head around! Everyone who knows me will confirm that I am kinda computer dyslexic, if there is such a thing, yep!
That's why I am exceedingly stoked to be holding theses babies in my hands now!
This time round there isn't only a Devon Edition, no Sir, there is a Cornwall one, too! And from the first previews that people have had, everyone seems to be satisfied with the look and feel of them. I have tried to reflect the atmosphere of both counties in them and hope it comes across!
